Co-Responder Program

Project Overview

To provide co response services to people in mental or behavioral health crisis in Adams County, the Health Department will increase the number of individuals served by co-responder programs by 1,500 (as reported by 4 ARPA funded co-response programs) by the end of 2025.To provide co-response services to people in mental or behavioral health crisis in Adams County, the Health Department will increase the number of services provided by co-responder programs (as reported by 7 co-response programs) by 30% by the end of 2025.

Why it matters?

First responders are often the only field-based responders for individuals struggling with mental illness, mental health issues, substance use, and other behavioral health issues.  Co response aims to deescalate these situations, improve the quality of interactions, promote safety, and facilitate access to care. An emerging body of evidence suggests that these programs reduce arrests, incarceration, and emergency room visits while effectively connecting people to needed care. Further,  co response teams often serve to make the sum of the system greater than its parts by promoting care coordination among agencies, health care, and the criminal justice system.
