Riverdale Animal Shelter (RAS) Barn Construction

Project Overview

Final design phase for the 1,200 square foot RAS barn completed in 2024. Construction officially began in mid-December 2024. Targeted construction completion date is currently anticipated by end of Q3 2025 with the barn being in full operational use by the animal shelter by Q4 2025.

Why it matters?

RAS is responsible for the safe and humane care of all types of companion animals that enter the shelter each year. The new barn will provide species appropriate housing, to include the necessary disease mitigation features required to care for small, farm type animals and birds that arrive at the Riverdale Animal Shelter each year as strays, owner surrenders, or as part of hoarding, abuse, and/or neglect cases. In 2024, RAS cared for more than 250 farm animals and birds, which had to be housed primarily in dog kennels, including isolation areas. With record intakes of dogs over the last three years, the addition of a barn will not only give farm animals more safe, sanitary, and appropriate housing, but will also free up much needed space in the main shelter facility for housing dogs. Housing farm animals in the barn will also improve cleaning efficiency and reduce wear on kennels in the main shelter facility.
